Emily Dickinson

My name is Emily Dickinson and I was born in Amherst, Massachusetts,in 1830. I communicate with others throughout my poetry. Many considered me an outcast and a eccentric person although, I had many friends who tried to comfort me. I isolated myself from humantiy and life, but I kept my close friend next to me. It was poetry who was my companion, when I locked myself in my bedroom and forgot about my loved ones. I expressed my thoughts by writing and throughout my lifetime I wrote about 2,000 poems. I became sick in bed at age 55. I refused to see a doctor and death took me on May, 15 1886.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

The poem describes how a bird signifies hope and its feathers bring hope to fly into a new beginning. When the bird sings it is singing songs that bring hope forever. It means hope comes to those who desire it and not to those who hurt others in this case, those who hurt the bird will be given pain. Lastly, hope can be found anywhere as long as you want it.

So far so good! Don't forget to analyze the poem. Very cute page! :)

I love your page and how you wrote her biography. But where are the meaning of the poem. Like the stanza's?

nicee!!

Very nice page, and great song for it. This poem consist of imagery because we picture hope as a bird. A bird has feathers which help it fly, fly to a new beginning. When your positive you will always have hope. When your negative you will hurt others. You can have hope at any point of your life, easy times and hard times, therefore you need to be positive.

I love your page. Your self description was quite interesting and it caught my attention. As for the poem, great way to describe it and analyze it. I admire your work .

Maria,

Great page! You describe Emily and her life in a very detail manner. The poem itself was a good poem; however, you did not mention where is hope located. Hope is the thing that perches in the soul, that means that it is found within the soul. Also, the poem mentions that hope can be found anywhere, even in the chillest land, meaning even in people who seem cold or faced harsh experiences. I was confused by the line which mentions that hope cannot be found within those who hurt others.

Anyhow, overall great poem and good analysis.
